Judge Nathaniel R. Jones to Receive 2016 Simeon Booker Award for Courage

Youngstown native Judge Nathaniel R. Jones will be the first recipient of the Simeon Booker Award for Courage on October 5, 2016 in conjunction with Ohio's 6th Annual Nonviolence Week. Judge Jones was born in the Smoky Hollow district of Youngstown, served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was admitted to the bar in 1957. On May 17, 1979, President Jimmy Carter nominated Judge Jones to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, where he served for 23 years, retiring in 2002. Simeon Booker, also a Youngstown native, stated "Judge Jones is one of the brilliant legal minds that guided the civil rights movement through a series of major victories......From his youth in Youngstown through his distinguished career as a lawyer and jurist, he opposed racial discrimination in all of its ugly forms." Congratulations to Judge Jones on his receipt of the Simeon Booker Award for Courage!
