Litter & Recycling

Overview

The Youngstown Litter & Recycling Division of Public Works is responsible for administering litter prevention and recycling programs within the City of Youngstown. Linda DeJoe, the City’s Educator Aide, will organize and conduct two contests in the Youngstown City Schools during the school year. One contest titled “Design a Book Cover” will be held in conjunction with Take Pride, Ohio!, Take Pride, Youngstown! month. The other “Design a Recycling Calendar” will be held in October. The anti-litter theme changes each year and the Keep America/Youngstown Beautiful board judges all the art work.

Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling is hosting a city wide clean-up of all sides of town including; pick-up of casual litter (separate recyclables from trash), brush and debris, minimal landscaping, and grass cutting. The event is taking place on Oct. 13, 2007 from 8am-12pm. We are meeting at the Chevy Centre on October 13 at 730am for a rally. Here is a flyer with all the info and a volunteer form to fill out and return to us ASAP.

During 2004 the Litter Control Division received grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Recycling Division of Mahoning County to produce continuing education projects that promote good disposal habits and enhance the city’s environment. Youngstown Litter Control & Recycling staff also conducts presentations on request for classes, community groups and businesses. Environmental workshops are periodically held for educators to keep them abreast of changing disposal laws and new resources for the classroom.

2004's phone book and magazine recycling drives collected 11,333.56 pounds of recyclable items. During 2005, Linda DeJoe, with the sponsorship of the local program, will conduct six (6) phone book and magazine recycling drives for residents. Each of the drives will be a one-day event, held on various sides of town. The three-day phone book collections will again be held in the downtown area. Check the Calendar of Events on this site for the dates and locations of these drives. Funds are being sought to lease a 20-yard roll-off to contain the material. This will be used as a match for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) grant. ODNR will be paying for the additional costs of the recycling drives. Linda DeJoe, in coordination with the Districts’ recommendations, will work to implement strategies that will enhance the overall community performance of waste minimization.

The City's Litter & Recycling Division works with the Mahoning County Green Team in an effort to Keep America/Youngstown/ Mahoning County Beautiful. The Green Team has drop off containers throughout the county for newspaper, cans, bottles etc. They also work with the city schools for cash for cans and paper recycling by donating recycling bins. The Green Team also gives out awards to businesses that recycle. You can click here to visit their website.<
